Market day again!

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because we had experience with making the chair so we knew how to make it balance.
In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My team made christmas cards with milk, food colouring and dishwashing liquid.

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was selling more of our product than we thought because there were  no other groups selling cards.

Next time I would spray the cards with mint scent to get rid of the rotten milk scent but apart from that I would change nothing.

Market Day

Market Day

For the Market day my school is hosting, my group and I have been making Christmas cards with milk, food colouring and dishwashing liquid. First, to make our product we had to think if it was related STEAM.

S-Science
T-Technology
E-Engineering
A-The Arts
M-Mathematics
We are selling them for...
Small cards are $1.00 or $1.50.
Big cards are $2.00 or $2.50.
We are selling them at 370 Innes Rd, St Albans, Christchurch.
This is an example of our product.

Have you ever been to a market Day?

PBL

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;
What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas.  Culture is Where you are from, Traditions, Religions, Holidays, Stories, Reunions and Celebrations.
Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage. I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.
In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on Maori legends. I read Hatupatu and the Bird Woman .I retold the legend of Hatupatu and the Bird Woman in my own words.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organising the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

Reflection:
For our production I contributed by play music on the guitar and also the ukulele.

I think the show might impact on others by the music and the acting that brings the storey alive.

What I learned about working with others was hidden music talents.

Thanks for reading my blog. Do play any Instruments? Come back for more soon!

Reading evidence

In reading this week we read an article from Kiwi kids News about Fortnite. I had to talk about why I thought the author wrote this text. This is my follow up task

I hope you agree with what I think. Do you agree with me? Come back for more soon!

Maths Evidence

Hi and welcome to my blog. For our maths we had to have some evidence to show that we understand a strategy. I chose Doubling and Halving. Here is my poster below.

I hope you learnt a bit about Doubling and halving. Now can you solve 20 x 87 using D and H? Thank you for looking at my blog. Come back for more soon!

Family Culture

Hi guys, welcome to my blog. The Learning focus
for term three Project Based learning is family Culture. I’m from Poland, Scotland, England and New Zealand.
Here are some different types of food from my culture:
Poland.
Pierogi.
Ingredients.

  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 butter, melted
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 8 baking potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

  • salt and pepper to taste
    • 2 bowls
    • Pot
    • Cookie sheet
    • Cookie Cutter, Pierogi Cutter, or a Glass
    • Spoon
    • Freezer Storage Bags or Containers
    • Large Pot
    • Slotted Spoon
    • Prep 2 h
    • Ready In 2 h
    How to Make
    1. In a large bowl, stir together the flour and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the butter, sour cream, eggs, egg yolk and oil. Stir the wet ingredients into the flour until well blended. Cover the bowl with a towel, and let stand for 15 to 20 minutes.
    2. Place potatoes into a pot, and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain, and mash with shredded cheese and cheese sauce while still hot. Season with onion salt, salt and pepper. Set aside to cool.
      1. Separate the perogi dough into two balls. Roll out one piece at a time on a lightly floured surface until it is thin enough to work with, but not too thin so that it tears. Cut into circles using a cookie cutter, pierogi cutter, or a glass. Brush a little water around the edges of the circles, and spoon some filling into the center. Fold the circles over into half-circles, andpress to seal the edges. Place perogies on a cookie sheet, and freeze. Once frozen, transfer to freezer storage bags or containers.
      2. To cook perogies: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Drop perogies in one at a time. They are done when they float to the top. Do not boil too long, or they will be soggy! Remove with a slotted spoon.

PBL

PBL, How can my hands, head and heart create a healthier me.

On Tuesday the 29 of May 2018 we had our parents come in and see our PBL. My friend and I did a Scratch Animation. The Animation is about a bear who tells you what type of food is good for fitness and sleeping. We showed our animation on a big TV. There were four subjects your could do. They were Nutrition, Mindfulness, Brain Science and Physical Activity. My Friend and I chose Physical Activity. Our driving question was what type of food is best for fitness and sleeping.

We had about seven parents come and look at our Animation. We both liked saying the introduction and feeling nerves while the animation was playing. Check out the Animation below!

Please come back for more and stay healthy!
